5-star yumminess

I wanted to do a thematic post with that last one... but I had a couple other pictures to share... so I split it into two posts!
Last night I made this fantastic meal... I've made it before, and I was testing it out again to see if I should put it in my annual Christmas cookbook. It'll definitely be in there! This is the "Star-Anise Glazed Tempeh with stir-fried peppers" from "Vegetarian Suppers" by Deborah Madison. Seriously, this recipe is reason enough to buy that cookbook. It's quick and delicious and different flavors than things I usually make - a bit sweet, a bit salty... mmm! I served it with saffron rice - white basmati flavored with saffron.

Also! tonight I made a second attempt at the apple-hazelnut bread I made the other night. Usually I"m one to reduce oil in a recipe, but this bread was WAY too dry the first time around. My standard M.O. is to follow a recipe faithfully the first time, and then start making changes as needed. That first loaf had a wonderful flavor, but was actually too dry to enjoy in the end. This time I added 2 Tablespoons of canola oil, and another 2 Tablespoons of olive oil. I haven't tasted it yet, because I'm planning on taking it on my trip with me to feed my friends - but it looks amazing. This time it rose nicely, and feels heavy and moist. Smells good too - it's got cloves, cocoa powder, and rum as speices - but just in very small amounts.

Can't wait to try it!

Mmm, I can't wait to hear how that Apple-Hazelnut Bread tastes - I just bought some hazelnuts the other day, so if this loaf recipe turned out to your liking, I'd love to make it! :0)

  6. I follow your MO most of the time- I hate to tinker with a recipe without making it as directed at least once, to know what I'm dealing with!

  7. Beautiful stirfry and that bread sounds really tasty and looks great. I can tell it rose a lot better this time. I should try your MO. I always have to change at least one thing in a recipe.

  8. Both of those recipes sound fantastic... wow, the tempeh really looks good!

I'm terrible--I can't make a recipe without tweaking it in some way! Well, yes I can... but I should try harder to give the recipe the benefit of the doubt before I try to doctor it up!
