Skyline to Sea Hike

Yesterday my friend Sandy and I hiked the "Skyline to Sea Trail"... a 13.3 mile descent from the redwood forest down to the Pacific Ocean. Luckily for us, it was mostly all downhill or flat... and not very strenuous at all. But let me tell you, 13.3 miles is still a pretty long walk!
Here we are at the "Strenuous Hike" sign... still full of enthusiasm at the beginning of the day!

A good long hike needs a good lunch break! Here's what I hauled along with me: quinoa, kale and sundried tomatoes (from the health food store deli); strawberries & nectarines; and the makings for a hummus sandwich. Now, I don't really love a soggy sandwich... so I packed all the elements separately: rye bread, tomatoes, basil, lettuce, fennel seeds (gourmet touch of elegance!), and a squeezable pack of "Hummus Dip." I've seen those little packs, and I think I first read about them on Vegan Lunch Box. It was pretty good hummus!

All in all, it was a lovely day, and a beautiful walk, and I was very very tired by the end of the day!

Congratulations! I have done that hike & (as veggiegirl mentions) 13.3 miles is definitely a long hike! It is well worth it for the reward at the end.

I am so envious of your food for the hike. Joe & I did this as part of a backpacking trip a few years back from Saratoga Gap/Castle Rock through Big Basin. We didn't bring a camp stove & mostly had boring stuff like trail mix and energy bars. Your lunch is much much better, and I esp. like the idea of quinoa for the energy on a hike like this.
