World's Most Awesomest Vegan Advent Calendar

Ever since I was a little girl, my parents always got my brother & me an advent calendar before Christmas. We weren't a religious family, but somehow this became a really big part of our holiday tradition. To this day I always buy myself at least one advent calendar to help foster my festive spirits. I always look for designs with lots of glitter and lots of cute animals.

So, when I saw that Cara at think.vegan.act was giving away advent calendars during VeganMoFo, I jumped at the chance to enter. Did you see her MoFo theme? It was all about veganizing traditional German recipes, and it was really exceptional. In fact, now she has a whole new blog just on that subject called "The Vegan German Inn."

Then, lucky me, I was one of the winners!! I was expecting some cute little German advent calendar with doors that open to show pictures of pretzels or pointy-eared squirrels. And no one knows how to draw advent calendars like the Germans - little rosy-cheeked elves, snow-flocked trees, sparkly packages... they have the best drawings. So imagine my joy and delight when I opened a package to find this beautiful, heavy (!!), and handmade creation!! I've never seen anything like it! It's got little mismatched baby socks and baby gloves with ornaments and ribbons and all sorts of gifties tucked inside each one. And all the goodies are vegan!!! I've seen those advent calendars that have chocolates for each day, but of course the chocolates are always milk chocolate. I never dreamed *I* could have a goodies advent calendar! This is just the most coolest thing ever and I am totally stoked on it.

I could hardly wait for today, December 1st to open my first baby glove! I opened it to find a sparkly little bag with special chocolate covered candies in it... even a little boozy I think! Mmm.

I was feeling so generous, I even shared with Mr. Vegan Eats & Treats!

Thank you Cara, this is the coolest thing ever!

  2. That is so rad! A homemade vegan advent calendar is absolutely the coolest thing.

We had advent calendars as kids that our great grandma made for us. They had a string to tie a piece of candy for each day. We always had so much fun inspecting the Brach's pick-a-mix bins for our favorite candies. The fifth day was my favorite since it was an additional treat on my birthday.

  3. That is fabulous! I loved Advent calendars too but they were throwaways. This is so sweet. If I start now, I might make one too and have it finished for next year. Maybe.

  4. How exciting! You're going to be so excited to wake up every morning and see what surprise awaits you. Although, it will be hard not to peek on future days!

  5. That is awesome! I love that kind of calendar. This year, I got a chocolte one from my mother from Moo Free Chocolate, totally vegan! The best thing is that you get to start every day with a piece of chocolate.

  7. I am so happy you like it :)

These small chocolate items are traditionally hung on a Christmas Tree, too.
I hope you'll also enjoy the rest of your calendar.

  11. What a neat advent calendar! I grew up receiving them as well, but found out a few years ago that they weren't vegan. Feeling bad for me at the time, my boyfriend built me an advent calendar filled with the most amazing treats - and now I'm convinced homemade advent calendars are the only way to go.
