Birthday Pie for Birthday Dad!

When I was a little girl, we never had dessert. I assumed it was some sort of Draconian health-food policy (which may have been partly the reason), but it turns out that my mom just really doesn't have a sweet tooth at all. Lucky her! I remember my dad would often make a joke after the plates had been cleared and say "Now we'll have pie for dessert!," knowing full well that there was no pie anywhere in that whole darned house.

All these years later, I came to know that he really, really loves Key Lime Pie in particular. For years I searched around for a good vegan version, and when Isa put this one up on the PPK, it quickly became my favorite. This year was pretty special, because my dad turned 75!! Wow! So, of course I had to make his favorite pie for him... and I also got him 75 daffodils, which are his favorite flower.

We used our special Roman Numeral birthday candles for the pie. My dad is a super awesome nerd dad - a theoretical astrophysicist, to be precise - so he appreciates dorky things like this. Plus, it's better than blowing out 75 candles right?!

Here's a cute picture of my dad with his pie, and my mom holding up a picture of him from his very 1st birthday with a cake with 1 lone candle on it, 75 years ago. Amazing!

Happy Birthday Daddy!
(yes, I totally call my dad "Daddy" - so there!)

  3. Happy birthday to your dad! I love this sweet post and especially the happy smile on your dad's face - side by side with a picture from his first birthday. This pie sounds delicious! I don't know that I've ever had key lime pie, but if it's one of Isa's recipes, it has to be good.

  7. Happy belated birthday to your Dad! This sounds like such a happy, and of course sweet, celebration. Really good idea to use flowers instead of candles too- Probably wise to prevent a potential bonfire on top of the cake when you have so many years to commemorate! I'll have to remember that one. :)

    I have to add.
My father was a very sweet man too. He passed away a while ago, I miss him so much. I cry even thinking about him.
My mother was the opposite of your mother, she loved sweets!
