Hoorah! A Vegan Travel Victory!

A few minor triumphs in the adventures of eating vegan overseas...

Yesterday we took a day trip from Dubrovnik (Croatia) into Trebinje (Bosnia i Herzegovina). Yesterday was a big rainy day... so we were just shuffling around from cafe to church to little store... Eventually we ended up at the Mercator Centar, which is a big chain in this region of supermarkets. We were looking for more cat food and dog food to give to the strays, but we got distracted by the massive cookie and candy aisle. A lot of the foods here have ingreident labels in about 10 languages for export throughout Europe... so I am often able to read. I got myself some real treats - hazelnut wafer cookies, integrale biscuits, and some macrobiotic granola bars in 4 flavors! Also, in another aisle, we found a veggie spread called "ajvar" made of eggplant, tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, garlic, olives... yum yum! How exciting is that!!??

And... best of all, right now I am experiencing the strange and unfamiliar sensation of having a belly full of delicious and tasty and nutritious food!!! Tonight, walking around Dubrovnik (which is an amazing and beautiful city), Musty noticed someone eating a wrap. We investigated... and thank heavens we did! For dinner tonight we had HUMMUS WRAPS! This may seem perfectly normal to any of you... but this is absolute heaven on earth for me. The wrap was delicious - a great tortilla, great hummous, lemon, garlic, lettuce, roasted red bell peppers, and great tomatoes. All I had to do to make it vegan was ask for no cheese... Easily done! The place was called Fresh, and I am definitely eating dinner there again tomorrow!

Ooooh yum yum yum. I'm glad you got some solid food with you! And I'm totally enjoying the foreign supermarket voyeurism that you are allowing me to enjoy! I hope your journey keeps giving you (pleasant) surprises!

Yay -- that must have been the best hummus wrap ever. Those granola bars look pretty promising, too!
