Spring Time at the Farmer's Market - and a "meatloaf" too!

HOOOOO-YEAH! Now things are really rolling at our farmer's market. This week the summer squashes burst back on the the scene and everyone was so happy to see their long-lost friends. Practically every booth has mountains of strawberries, and even the tomato lady had a couple of new varieties.
Here's what I got:
Spring onions
Baby leeks
Green onions
Garlic
3 cartons of strawberries
Early Girl & Golden tomatoes
2 bunches of asparagus
Rainbow Chard
Arugula
Purple Cauliflower
1 gigantic pomello
4 oranges
6 artichokes
Fresh basil
1 bag of walnuts
and lastly 1 jug of soymilk
All organic & local!! Right on!

Here are our leftovers from lunch at the **amazing** Black China Cafe in Santa Cruz. We thought we were so hungry, so we ordered 3 "sandwiches" - but I guess we only needed two. This is their Hummus Sandwhich - hummus served on toasted Francese bread with cherry tomatoes, cukes, black sesame seeds, & fennel seeds... and served with a salad. So good!! All that said, the REAL star of the show was the "Muffaletta" sandwhich I ordered, but unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. I'll just have to go back and order another one so I can get a picture for next time! :)

Last night I made this simple meatloaf from the most recent Vegetarian Times issue. I dog-eared this recipe when I first flipped through the magazine looking for good vegan or veganizable recipes - but then I saw it on Two Vegan Sisters, on Don't Get Mad Get Vegan, and on Eat'n Veg'n. It was very easy to make, and I have to say - Musty and I both loved it!

Here's how we ate it - sliced (this slice sorta fell apart) & with a mountain of broccoli.

I am so envious of your farmer's market!! Mine won't look like that for at least three more months...

  4. Oh I'm so jealous! Though I should have some pictures soon of all the stuff from my mom's and my garden. Right now we just have a huge basket of fresh (organic) strawberries, from the field, but the asparagus (and not just green, purple too), snow peas, purple potatoes, onions, blueberries, raspberries, apples, figs, cherries, kale, everything is starting to bloom or come up.

P.S. That purple cauliflower is amazing! Even the purple asparagus isn't THAT purple :)

  5. I hope my farmers market is as well stocked Sat. morning. I'm really looking forward to strawberries.

Isn't that loaf good! Let me know if you ever find a good loaf made with beans.

  6. Oh, what a beautiful array of farmer's market veggies--and all eco-friendly! Way to go! I never was a meatloaf person, but I must admit that veggie meatloaf looks slightly more appealing to me--who knows, I may even try it one day. The hummus sammies look delicious!

  8. Oh no - it looks like I've missed a couple of your delicious food posts. Everything looks incredible! Your farmer's market haul is amazing. I'd love a slice of that "meat"loaf...and the fruit tart looks exquisite! I can't wait for some fresh berries to start popping up here in Chicago (it still may be awhile...). So nice of your friends to make a vegan meal for you, and it's funny how we Americans tend to plop everything on a plate all at once. I never really thought about that habit before. Have a good weekend! =)

  10. Look at all that abundant fresh produce. And vegan meatloaf is always yummy...and you have to cut it up anyway, so who cares if it falls apart?
