Best Avocado of My Life

Best Avocado of My Life.
Oh Avocado. I loved you.

I know that some of you poor souls out there in internet-ville don't have easy access to avocados, and I'm sorry for your suffering. Here in California, though, avocados aren't hard to come by. All around town, people have avocado trees in their backyards, and there are avocados at our farmers' markets all year long. Basically, I can get my hands on an avocado pretty much whenever I want one.

Still, even in the land of plenty, a bad avocado can really be a bummer. You cut into your avocado with a heart full of anticipation and hope - only to find a mushy brown mess of despair. It is very disappointing. Recently, though, I had the opposite experience. I picked up this giant beauty at a local health food store. It's a Bacon Avocado, which has an unfortunate name, but is otherwise a glory to behold.

This was the best avocado I've ever had. Huge, velvety smooth, creamy, perfectly balanced in the firm-soft spectrum, flavorful and beautiful. I took a picture to memorialize it. Then, I went back to the store and bought more. I've got one sitting on the counter ripening right now.

Mostly, I either put avocados on our salads (just cut up in cubes) or I put avocado slices on toast with a little bit of lime juice. I think those are my two primary modes of avocado consumption. How about you? What would you do with these special avocados?

Oh gosh, that looks amazing....but alas, I am allergic to those lovely beauties. Bummer! :-(

I saw an interesting appitizer on a menu recently though - avocado fries. Apparently they were lightly tossed with panko, quickly fried in olive oil, and served with a spicy garlic aioli. Sounds interesting!

I like to put avocados on whole wheat wraps with hummus, a tri-bean blend, carrots, tamato, and romaine.

  3. i am so jealous! i live in NY and avocados are so expensive here that i never get them :( which is unfortunate because i love them so. i like them on toast with lemon juice, or when my dad makes guacamole, its the best! i recently made pasta withe avocado, pesto, and lemon, that was very tasty too :)

  4. I love a really good avocado in nothing more than a simple guacamole: salt, lime and cilantro. But, I have been known to stuff mushrooms with mashed avocado mixed with a little toasted sesame oil and batter fry them.

Usually, we just cube them up and put them in salad, or I put them in a bowl.

The drawing of riding a bicycle for two with an avocado half is very funny!

  9. I can think of plenty of delicious ways to prepare a perfect avocado. But the best is just cut up and scattered across a salad.

More importantly, though, are how funny your pictures are. I started laughing at the ones of you and your avocado in love. Especially the bike picture. Thanks for making me smile!
