I'm Back!

Hi Everyone!
I had a great trip to San Diego... lots of fun visiting my friends and meeting their new adopted baby girl. What a little sweetie she is. I took a thousand cute baby pictures, but I also managed to take a few food pics on our trip... so here goes:

For lunch on our first day together we went to a neat health food store that had a great deli upstairs... full of good stuff! I picked out some spicy orange seitan, cinnamon cookies, tempeh nuggets, and a very cool "Black Arkansas" apple. Yum! The apple was so, so beautiful. It looked like a big, ripe nectarine.

At the store we also got this cool, weird bread. It was baked in a can or a glass or something... so it was shaped like a pint glass. It was dense, sour, sprouted bread... and really great toasted! We ended up eating the whole thing in just a couple of days. They look like little hamburger patties, don't they!?

One day we went out to lunch and I got this Hummus Wrap with olives and tomatoes and fresh spinach. In the end, I thought it was just okay... somehow it didn't all come together in a very interesting way. But at least it was healthy.

We had fun making this dinner together. We were trying to use up whatever my friend already had in her kitchen... She had a ton of different greens in her fridge from their CSA box - chard, collards, dandelions, and I don't know what else. She sauteed them up with some leeks and they were delicious!! Then we roasted up some beets in the oven, and cooked up a can of black beans with some sauteed garlic & onions, a big mess of coriander & cumin, and then a bunch of tomatoes and fresh cilantro added in at the end. Also, they have this super cool toaster thing from Crate and Barrel that she used to make some nice garlic toast. Yum Yum!

Hope you all had a nice few days... and hopefully I'll be cooking up something tasty today or tomorrow.

That bread looks very intriguing. I can just imagine how good it would taste toasted with a little Earth Balance. Yum!

I made your split pea patties tonight for dinner (so now I'm left with 24.5 pounds of yellow split peas) and they were really delicious but I found that I wanted a topping or something saucy and the only thing I had convenient and handy was some pesto and that seemed to do the trick! Great recipe. Thanks!

  2. Hi VivV!
Yeah, I agree that those patties need something saucy or moist. They're much better with something like that. Glad you found something to go with it!

    Hi,
I found your blog through a link on Susan's fatfreevegan blog. Since I live in San Diego part of the year, I'm curious what health food stores and restraunts you went to. I've been vegan for close to a year and a half, but haven't done that much yet to check out restaurants around here, and I'm always looking for another health food store. Any tips (good or bad) would be great!

I've never heard of a Black Arkansas apple!

Those wraps look really good, but your homemade plate looks the best!

Glad you had a good visit in San Diego!

  5. Hi Anon,
I think the health food store we went to was called "People's Store" or something like that... it's a co-op in the Ocean Beach Area. My friend (who is Indian) also mentioned that there is a great Indian market in town, which sounded fun but we didn't make it there. Have you seen the website www.vegsandiego.com? They have links to restaurants, grocery shopping, and more. It's pretty cool.

    Hi Diann,
I hadn't ever heard of a Black Arkansas apple either, cool huh?? And I gotta say, there's just nothing like yummy homemade food!

    :)

That bread sounds great! I just looked it up because we'll be going through Julian on our holiday travels, but alas it is closed for the holidays. Fun to see what you got in San Diego!
