My Friend Pomelo, A Portrait Gallery

Do you know my friend Pomelo? Pomelo is really great. I met Pomelo at the farmer's market a couple of years ago, and we have been good friends ever since.

Pomelo is enormous! In our family, only Musty's head is able to dwarf Pomelo.
Even Pomelo's rind is about 1 inch thick. On the inside, Pomelo is dark pink, like a ruby grapefruit. In fact, Pomelo tastes like a sweet pink grapefruit.

Pomelo is much bigger than Yummer's head. Yummers loves human food, but prefers to keep his distance from Pomelo.

Snoopy and Pomelo get along well. Snoopy even took Pomelo off the computer desk all by himself! Maybe he was looking for a play date?

Pomelo is pretty classy, and he costs about $2.00, but I think he's worth it.

Dottie is diplomatic with Pomelo, but they are not very close.

Stevie Wonder is a bit wary of Pomelo... especially when Pomelo is trying to get so close.

I think Pomelo is really delicious and also, Pomelo brings out my inner Fem-bot.

Personally, I like to peel Pomelo, and eat it like that. I even peel off the skins, so there is no bitterness. It is crazy and fun to eat something so huge!

Ha, I can't believe how huge those are! I haven't yet had a pomelo, but now I'm really curious.

  3. Too funny! Love it! I bought one once, but let it go bad (bad me!). I must try again.

Where do you live? Man it looks sunny - I'm so jealous. I think we might get some warmth up her in Minnesota soon. Maybe...I hope.

  6. How funny! I remember you love pomelos and I really do think about you when I pass them by in the market. Our ruby red grapefruits are so sweet right now. Maybe I'll do a comparison.

  8. I'm a huge red grapefruit fan (I peel and eat one like an orange every weekday), but the pomelo I tried was not juicy and quite bitter. I haven't bought another one since. It sounds like you've had different experiences, so maybe I'll give them a second chance...I mean, if it's going to bring out my inner femme-bot, it's worth another go, right? ;)

  11. cute pictures! that is one giant fruit. regular grapefruits cost like $2.00 at nice grocery stores anyway...totally worth it for a giant one like that!

  12. Haha! Pomelo butt! *points and laughs*

Stevie Wonder's face is priceless! He's not a pomelo man.

I've made a few recipes form your Gastronomus Maximus and posted pictures on my blog. Everything I've made has been a big hit! :)

I've only tried it once, but remember being disappointed, thinking "all that work and so much of it is PEEL?" It was almost as small as an orange inside! Maybe I just got a bad one. . .you make it sound like fun!

This is, without a doubt, the best series of Pomelo photographs EVER. Bravo! I especially love the comment: "In our family, only Musty's head is able to dwarf Pomelo."

This is my first visit to your blog, and I absolutely had to comment on this post! When I first moved to Hawaii six years ago we lived in a house with a tree in the yard that grew enormous grapefruit-like orbs. These orbs perplexed us until a neighbor explained to us what they were: pomelo. We would have so many at once that we would go bowling with pomelos through our yard and down the driveway. So .... pomelo: he loves to bowl.

I love your pomelo tale. Wow, a pomelo tree! Sounds like heaven. But, I guess if you were living in Hawaii, it really was heaven. Thanks for deepening my understanding of Pomelo, I really appreciate it!

  25. Hahahaha, a very funny post. I love the pictures with the animals. I've seen these gargantuan pomelos at the markets but have always been a little nervous about trying one. I'm thinking next time I'll have to go for it.

It's really a funny post. Pomelo is one of my favorite fruits. This fruit is the largest of all citrus fruits and can be stored for several months. I love the juiciness and sweetness of it.
