My Friend Pomelo, A Portrait Gallery

Do you know my friend Pomelo? Pomelo is really great. I met Pomelo at the farmer's market a couple of years ago, and we have been good friends ever since.

Pomelo is enormous! In our family, only Musty's head is able to dwarf Pomelo.
Even Pomelo's rind is about 1 inch thick. On the inside, Pomelo is dark pink, like a ruby grapefruit. In fact, Pomelo tastes like a sweet pink grapefruit.

Pomelo is much bigger than Yummer's head. Yummers loves human food, but prefers to keep his distance from Pomelo.

Snoopy and Pomelo get along well. Snoopy even took Pomelo off the computer desk all by himself! Maybe he was looking for a play date?

Pomelo is pretty classy, and he costs about $2.00, but I think he's worth it.

Dottie is diplomatic with Pomelo, but they are not very close.

Stevie Wonder is a bit wary of Pomelo... especially when Pomelo is trying to get so close.

I think Pomelo is really delicious and also, Pomelo brings out my inner Fem-bot.

Personally, I like to peel Pomelo, and eat it like that. I even peel off the skins, so there is no bitterness. It is crazy and fun to eat something so huge!

A New Orleans Feast!

You know what's funny? Whenever I get HOME from a place, then I have such a pent up craving for the local food that I get right into the kitchen. There's not a lot of vegan Cajun-Creole food to be had in New Orleans, so I kept hearing about all this great food and not eating it. So, as soon as I was back home in the kitchen, I knew just where to set my sights.

We have a nice little tradition in our family, that whenever a person comes home from a special trip, we have a family photo night. Then the lucky traveler gets to tell us all about their trip, and no one misses out on the stories. If any gifts were brought home, they are handed out, and then we all look at the pictures. We get all cuddled into one room to see the pictures on the computer monitor, and then people start falling asleep! ha.

So tonight I showed my photos from my New Orleans trip and made this delicious feast to celebrate. We had 4 dishes (clockwise from top left): Gluten Sauce Piquant with homemade gluten, savory dinner grits, collard greens, and smothered black-eyed peas. My dad was especially thrilled, because he grew up in the south with black-eyed peas and grits... and doesn't find them often out here in Santa Cruz. The flavors were full and interesting and complimentary - it was a grand affair and we all left the table with full, happy bellies.

These recipes are from Kittee, and are from the recipes she's testing for vegan New Orleans cuisine. If you're crazy to try them out, email her about become a tester.

What I Brought Home From New Orleans

Uhhh... I didn't really buy anyone any gifts or anything like that. But I did bring home a bunch of new and exciting ingredients for my cupboard! Miss Fancy Kittee took me to the grocery store and told me what I needed to buy. I am ignorant in these matters, so I faithfully obeyed her every suggestion. Now I can cook up all sorts of New Orleans recipes!

Photo #1:
Rouses Italian Olive Salad - so that I can make some delicious vegan Muffaletta Sandwiches.
Yum! I can hardly wait. I am pretty sure that Musty will like this stuff a lot.
Root Beer Extract - well, you already know about this, since I blogged about it before
Creole Mustard - I haven't tasted it yet. Kittee says it is good and worth buying.
Joseph's Whole Spicy Pickled Okra - That's for Musty, 100%. He is a fan of hot pickled okra.

Yessir, Yes'm, I was mighty glad that none of these fine goodies broke or exploded in my luggage!

Photo #2:
Louisiana Pecans - mmmmm. this purchase requires no justification
Zatarain's Pro Boil - a lovely and interesting spice mix for making crab boil. Needless to say, I will not be boiling any crabs, but I do look forward to experimenting with this stuff. Kittee had scoped them out ahead of time and knew that this is the one without MSG. Good!
Camellia Beans: Large Limas and Red Kidneys - Oh yeah! Red Beans and Rice, here I come!

Photo #3:
Sambar Powder - Homemade by Kittee!
Sassafras File' - bought for me by Kittee's mom! File' is hard to find out here in Santa Cruz, so now I have a good stash for my future gumbo-making
Tony Chachere's Salt Free Seasoning - now, I didn't have too much trouble finding normal Tony Chachere's out here, but it's crazy salty! So, under Kittee's guidance, I bought the salt-free variety.
Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce - straight from the source, baby!
Old Bay - another item I've seen in many recipes but have never found in the grocery store. Ah!

So... now I'm off to the kitchen!

Random Eats in the Big Easy

It's my last day in New Orleans! I'm gonna celebrate by spending the afternoon with Kittee... who knows what sort of adventures we'll get into. More king cakes? Balancing beans on our noses? Trip to the dog park? It's all fun!

But before I go, I thought I'd post these last few food-related pics from my time here.

Abita Root Beer! Made locally with "Louisiana Cane Sugar". Yesterday a friend and I took a little mini roadtrip through the Cajun country... and saw many of the sugar cane fields.

We also went to Avery Island, where they make Tobasco sauce! That was fun. Of course I bought some for myself. I picked out their "Chipotle Tobasco" and I look forward to trying it. The Tobasco factory is really cool. Well, we didn't go on the factory tour (which I would have enjoyed), but we did tour the 250-acre Jungle Gardens that the original owner started. It's amazing! There is even a huge area called "Bird Island" which is single-handedly credited with reviving Louisiana's egret population after near extinction from hunting in the 1800's. Apparently the Victorian ladies liked feathers in their hats and that fancy trend almost wiped out the egrets, until Mr. Tobasco's son took up the cause. How cool to know that Tobasco was started by a plant and animal-loving family, and is still owned by them today. We can feel good about buying Tobasco, my vegan friends!

No no, I didn't go and buy a store bought king cake. Why would I ever do that with my friend Kittee on the scene? But I did like the way that this packaged king cake says "CAUTION: Non-Edible baby figure inside this cake." hee hee! That's not a food label warning that you see too often.

Here is a crappy picture of some amazing chocolate. Our teacher brought us a big selection of fancy chocolates on the last day of our workshop. They weren't all vegan, but these 3 flavors were: Cocoa Nib, Violet, and Rose. The last two had crunchy little candied flowers on top. Whoa! they were gorgeous. Also, the chocolate was wonderful, crisp but smooth with a high cocoa content. The cocoa nibs and candied flowers provided some textural contrast with a little crunch. Mmmm.

What's this oddity? Well, I found it on campus at Tulane... and it was looking relatively healthy. Pretty much it's just canned beans with some salt and pepper and sweet corn. It was quite hearty and totally edible. No, this was not the best thing I've ever eaten. But, for convenient vegan food on-the-go, it was healthy and hearty and filling and pretty tasty. So, I'd recommend it for that kind of situation... but not for a candlelit dinner!

Oh no you didn't! Oh yes, I DID. Really, what trip to the Southern U.S. is complete without at least one meal at a restaurant that has exactly one vegan item on the menu: the glorious plain baked potato with ketchup! ha ha. My roadtrip friend and I ended up a seafood spot, where I happily enjoyed this enormous and perfectly baked potato. I was not sad about it. In fact, I quite enjoyed it. But I did have some grapefruit and a Luna bar once we got home!

King Cake With Kittee!

Hello Friends!
Today, Kittee and I got together after my class got out (we had a special half-day today!), and we made King Cakes together! Her mom is in town, so that was a double bonus! All three of us had fun hanging out in the kitchen and cooking together. It was such a blast. Be warned! Kittee and I are both planning on blogging all about our fun day together using the same pictures. So you should check her blog and she what she says about them too!

First things first. Kittee and Dazee have the world's cutest dog. His name is Vee and he is really beautiful. He has golden eyelashes that are about 3/4-inch long. It's amazing. I had a treat in my pocket, which is why I was able to get such a cute picture of him in the kitchen.

We mixed up our dough, using Kittee's recipe found on her website. We didn't have a mixer though, so we had to take turns kneading the dough. We made a triple batch: one for me, one for Dazee, and one for Kittee's friend. We made our dough and set it out on the porch to rise in the sunlight. Isn't that very down-home of us?! The dough rises for a while... "until it doubles in size"... so we set out on some errands.

One of our stops was George's Farmers Market - a favorite produce stand of Kittee's. This place is totally rad, just the way every good Mom 'n' Pop Southern produce stand should be - bags of nuts and beans and cans of every kind of home made pickles and preserves, local produce... I bought a few goodies including a big bag of local Louisiana Satsumas. When we got there, George was feeling pretty cranky about all the zulu coconuts they had to paint for Mardi Gras, so I didn't take his picture, but I did get this super cute picture of Kittee and George's wife Charell. She had just had a huge coffee, and she was really buzzing around. What a sweetie!

George and Charell's daughter Joyet was in the back of the shop, decorating their Zulu Coconuts. This is a Mardi Gras thing, which Kittee will surely explain better. George is part of the Zulu Krewe, and come Mardi Gras, they will parade with their float and hand out these special, very desirable, zulu coconuts to deserving revelers on the streets.

Aren't the coconuts beautiful!? Can you see, they have a big fancy Z and the "ulu"? And they're not all purple and black- she had SO MANY buckets of different colors of glitter.

Well, we came home from our errands, and look what was waiting for us on the porch! All poofy! Can you see the bump? We were very happy.

Together, we punched down the dough. Kittee was very lady-like and used one finger, while I was a big brute and punched it in with my whole fist!

Next, I rolled out the dough really wide and really long. Kittee's rolling pin is packed away, so I used this bottle of wine. You know what? It was a really freaking great rolling pin. The dough was so great - springy and smooth and elastic.

Then we mixed up some Earth Balance and cinnamon and sugar. This is a gross picture! I did not intend for it to look like I was about to eat an entire stick of Earth Balance! Ewww. For the record, when we made our second King Cake, we used a different, superior method. We just softened a couple tablespoons of EB, spread it on, and sprinkled on the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Do that.
Here is my rolled out dough with Cinnamon-sugar-Earth balance mixture spread on. Next, we carefully rolled it up into a long tube. I didn't take pictures, because this was a two person job! I felt like we were wrestling a giant anaconda of king cake dough.

Then we shaped our long snake into an oval ring and set it on the pan.

do you know what? We forgot the baby! King Cakes have a little baby hidden inside, and if your slice has the baby in it, you are supposed to bring the king cake next year. That is what I have been told anyway... not like I'm suddenly some sort of King Cake expert! Well, we didn't have any of the fancy modern plastic babies, so we used the traditional method of using a dry bean.

However, we were slightly untraditional, because we used a Sharpie pen to draw a little baby in diapers on both of our beans. Kittee was suddenly possessed, and we did a whole photo shoot of her balancing the baby bean on her nose, out on the front porch.

So, we are not the first people who have forgotten the baby, and there is an established method for handling this situation. We stabbed a little slit in, and slipped in the baby bean. Then we pinched it back shut, and popped it in the oven.

While it was cooking, we mixed together sugar and some fancy food coloring paste that Kittee pulled out of her pantry. See, we made Purple, Green, and Yellow. Those are the Mardi Gras colors, and you don't mess with that. Incidentally, I am lucky to be visiting Kittee at this time, as it seems that these locals are also very picky about only eating King Cake during Mardi Gras time. The season has just officially begun, so we have the go-ahead for this culinary adventure.

See my gorgeous King Cake!? That's mine on the tinfoil, and Dazee's is down below, about to pop in the oven.

Next up, make the icing. This is powdered sugar and Cointreau liquor. There's orange zest in the batter, so we thought the orangey ness of the liquor in the glaze would be good. Kittee says that the glaze has to be thick, but *just* thin enough that you can pour it. The pouring thing is very important.

There it is, all covered in icing. No one knows where the baby is! (Except me, and Kittee, and Kittee's mom - but we're not telling!)

The next step was super fun! Sprinkling on the colored sugar! Kittee also had some super wonderful "edible glitter" that was a lighter purple, and so she added some of that to the purple zones. Isn't it crazy looking and beautiful? I was dancing in the kitchen, I was so happy. What a great time.

Here is another shot, because I am feeling boastful. Ha! I've carefully transported my special vegan king cake back home to my B&B, and tomorrow I plan to bring it to share with all the other friendly folks in my yoga course. I'm sure it will be a welcome treat after so many hours of extremely refined and esoteric conversation!

Kittee is totally rad. Believe the hype! Thanks for a wonderful day, Kittee & Kittee's Mom!

Hanging with Kittee!

wooo hooo!
Here I am in New Orleans... grooving on 5 hours of yoga philosophy a day, and lots of hang out time with the wonderful and awesome Kittee! I was super excited to meet Kittee, after years of reading her blog, and I was even more super excited when I found out how cool she is!

The first night we met, we went out to a great spot called "Lebanon's Cafe" with us two and Dazee, her husband. Lebanese food, if it wasn't obvious. I had a delicious bowl of lentil soup, we had a plate of olives and pickles, 2 delicious and tasty eggplant dips, Kittee had some fatoush, and Dazee had some stuffed grape leaves. It was super fun, and I was psyched that Kittee is so rad. I ran home and emailed Musty all about it!

Last night I went over to their house and she very kindly fed me dinner - sweet potato chili with peanut butter, and stuffed tofu pockets. mmmmmy! Also I got to hang out with her super cutey dog Vee. He is really cute, but also has some social issues, so I got to give him lots of veggie hot dog pieces so he'd like me. It seems like it went pretty well!

She also set me up with my own copy of Papa Tofu (weee heee!) and a bottle of my very own local New Orleans Root Beer Extract! Yippee. As soon as I home, I am going to make Hannah's Root Beer Cupcakes. I have wanted to make those for a long time!

Yes, we are having fun together. We are going to make vegan king cakes! Tomorrow Kittee Mom is coming to town, so I will get to meet her too! We will go see George the grocer!

Three Cheers for Kittee!

New Year Gifties!

UPDATE:
all out!

Dear Friends,
This year I only have 10 copies of my annual cartoony vegan cookbooklet leftover (after giving them as holiday gifts to my family, friends, yoga students, and practically everyone I know and like). So I would like to share these with you! How's that for a nice way to start off the new year?

Here's the cover. This year's title is Gastronomus Maximus (Musty's idea)

Leave a comment here first, and then send me an email with your name and mailing address (ameyfm at yahoo dot com). Just so you know, I'm heading off to a yoga workshop in New Orleans on Saturday (for two weeks! woot!), so I'll do my best to get these in the mail before I leave, but you may need to wait. (Update... it will have to wait... my cold has gotten the better of me, and I was not able to make it to the post office)

Hope you had a great start to the new year! As for me, I've got a rotten cold, but at least I had all my furries to keep me company on the sofa, especially this snuggly little guy:

Happy New Year!
