(Almost) Everybody Loves Corn!

We've been eating a lot of corn this summer... it's just SO good! Corn bread, corn chowder, corn in salads, corn on the cob, and on and on! And it's not just Musty and I who've been enjoying it.

Our cat Yummers is CRAZY for corn. As soon as the corn is out of the fridge, he is in the kitchen meowing up a storm, begging for corn. Raw or cooked, he is crazy for the stuff. So, after we've had our corn, we often give him a few kernels, or sometimes the whole cob to enjoy.

Well, Stevie Wonder loves it too! Stevie always takes her big treats into the backyard, where she can guard the goods from the other dogs. One night, I gave her a cob, and a few seconds later we heard "thump. thump... thump..." Turns out the cob was too wide to fit through her doggie door! So we had to open the door for her. This spot in the back yard is where she hoards all the toys and doesn't let any other doggies come near them.

Dottie Bonkers is always very dignified with her food. Lady like and proper. None of this doggish snarfing of human food, just because it's human food. No, not for Dottie B. She needs to sniff it, make sure she approves, and then slowly proceed with the eating process. She is a great combo of goofy and elegant.

The only family member who isn't crazy about corn is Snoopy. He gets very excited when the corn cobs are being handed out, because of the general atmosphere of glee... but he always rejects the corn immediately. I couldn't leave him out though, so here's a picture anyway. He's cute!

  2. This just may be the cutest blog post I've ever seen!!! I used to have a YouTube video on my MySpace page of a kitten eating corn and it made me smile everyday!

I love how dogs will eat ANYTHING just because it's human food. Last night, my dog ate the last few bites spicy curry veggies on my plate...which was totally warm for my tastes. And he usually rejects spicy things, but if it's on my plate, he automatically wants some.

  7. My dog is bonkers for corn cobs, too. I love the way she prances through the backyard with the cob in her mouth, like she just won a prize. I'll have to try sharing some with the kitties, though. My older cat loves popcorn...

Your kitty and puppies are beautiful! Our kitties won't eat any human food. They'll only sniff it, lick it or knock it off the counter.

I hope you'll enjoy your gumbo! We haven't tried cooking with fresh okra yet.

  11. That's adorable. I work at a vegetable stand/farm in Virginia, and there are tons of farms cats that they keep around to control mice in the hay barn. I watched one of the cats shuck and eat the corn. Of course, when I took an ear home for my cat, he stuck his nose in the air and ran off.

  13. My cats love corn, too - I have to put the cobs out in the compost immediately or they'll eat the entire cob! I'm worried they'll choke on big pieces, silly furballs.

  14. My cats all love the corn silk and husks - they're weird! I keep the cobs away from everyone though after having a dog go through intestinal surgery to remove an obstruction because they do not digest well. Cobs are actually the largest cause of blockage in dogs & are on the no-no list - just a suggestion you may want to Google so the lovely Dottie Bonkers doesn't get an upset tummy!

  15. Cute, cute, cute. Corn cobs are the one item our sneaky little terrier (terror) will manage to filch out of the compost, no matter WHAT I do... Then he chews them up but doesn't really swallow much - it's like they are shredded all over the kitchen floor... SUCH A MESS!!! Ahhh, I love my pets!
