VeganMoFo Day 10: Something Blue...

Today's MoFo Prompt: "Something Blue"

Hmm... something blue? That can be hard when it comes to food. I've participated in many years of the rainbow potluck by now, and I know that blue food is pretty hard to come by. But you know what isn't that hard to come by? Blue hair!

So I thought I would talk today about my vegan hair products that keep my hair a delightful shade of bright blue, without harming any of our animal friends. So far in my blue-haired journey, I have been keeping up my color with a combination of Special Effects hair dye and oVertone Vibrant Blue conditioner. Thanks to those of you who told me about oVertone, I really love their product!

Not all hair dye is vegan, so I wanted to make sure that the brand I bought was. I asked a couple of my colored-hair vegan pals for guidance (thank you!), and so far I've been pretty happy with Special Effects. I use a teal color on my bangs and then a deeper blue on the rest. The Overtone conditioner comes in two varieties: one for regular washings during the week, and then a weekly deep conditioner that you leave in for 20 minutes. Their products are all vegan, smell really great, and leave my hair feeling so soft and lovely.

goopy blue-headed monster!

The blue fades pretty quickly, so I need to refresh it about every 10-12 days or so. I usually mix the Overtone conditioner and the Special Effects dye together and then smear it carefully all over my whole head. I always wear a dark blue or black shirt (and gloves) when I do it, so that I won't get blue dye on anything where it will matter. I apply it in the bathroom, but I rinse it out in the garage, where we have a proper workshop sink that does not need to be protected from the ravages of blue hair dye.

Next I leave the dye and conditioner on my hair for about 20-30 minutes. This week, in honor of today's MoFo prompt, I also ate a bowl of blueberries from a blue bowl. Even more ridiculous is that I had a bunch of new yoga mats for my yoga studio airing out in my backyard, and they were all blue too. So, this is an extremely blue picture.

I just love the way my hair looks for the first few days after I've spruced it up and re-blued it.

look out for the Blue Flash!

I'm not used to having any beauty regimens, so this is definitely something new for me. All my life I've never worn make up or really done anything other than basic hygiene. Half the time I don't even remember to brush my hair and Mr. VE&T has to remind me. I only started using conditioner after I got a little tube of Beauty Without Cruelty conditioner in my swag bag from the 2nd VidaVeganCon 2 years ago. So all this regular upkeep is a bit of a stretch for me, but for now, I am really loving my blue hair, and I even kind of enjoy my goopy blue ritual every couple of weeks.

  1. Your hair is so bright & cute! I dyed my hair blue once, but I didn't do any upkeep and just let it fade, so I admire your dedication! :D

  3. Completely perfect! They didn't say it had to be blue food and, as expected of you, you did the unexpected. Down to the whole documentation of the ritual. Love it! And it looks really good, too!

Oh, wow, it turned out so lovely! I love it, and that's a great haircut. I've been bright pink for about a year and a half now, though I was teal for a couple of months earlier this year. I use Special Effects & Manic Panic, but I've had my eye on Overtone for a while. I keep hesitating, because I think that any second now I'm going to be tired of the pink and go back to brown.
